When it comes to cleaning, one of the biggest headaches is removing mineral deposits on surfaces found in restrooms. You see, tap water contains dissolved minerals, and it is these minerals that create a dulling film on fixtures and build up crusty layers. The more minerals thatare dissolved in water, the worse the problem can become. These minerals
also react with soap, creating a difficult to clean soap scum in sinks, tubs and shower walls.

A little knowledge about the nature of mineral deposits, sometimes referred to as lime scale, can help in the removal of these deposits and even prevent them from forming in the first place. We start by looking at tap water, which contains positively charged calcium and magnesium ions. It is the amount of these ions dissolved in water that determines water ‘hardness’.

When water dries from a surface, these calcium and magnesium ions are deposited on surfaces in the form of a white, crusty substance called calcium or magnesium carbonate. When Calcium or magnesium ions react with negatively charged ions found in soap, a difficult to clean film is formed commonly known as soap scum.

To remove soap scum and hard water deposits, as well as preventing build ups, specialty cleaning products are used that often have an acidic pH. pH is a term used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of the cleaning solution. Pure water has a neutral pH of 7, acids have a pH below 7, alkalines have a pH above 7. Most cleaning is done at neutral and alkaline pH values, because this pH is best suited to normal dirt and oily soils. However, lime scale and mineral deposits are only sensitive to acidic pH values; therefore an acidic cleaner is needed.

To remove visible lime scale buildup, a Lime Scale Remover like Multi-Clean Phos-Clean is recommended. This product is strongly acidic and rapidly dissolves lime scale, but it is safe for chrome fixtures.

To keep Lime Scale and Soap Scum from building up on surfaces, regular use of a milder acidic cleaner is recommended. Multi-Clean Foamy MAC is an acidic cleaner that is non-corrosive and green seal certified. As a daily restroom cleaner,
it rapidly removes soap scum, dull hard water residues and other restroom soils.
